Cosmos 2612 satellite performs close approach to ICEYE-X36

The Russian military satellite Cosmos 2612 has performed a series of highly unusual and deliberate orbital maneuvers to approach the ICEYE-X36, a commercial radar imaging satellite registered in the United States. The ICEYE-X36, operated by the Finnish-founded company ICEYE, provides critical synthetic aperture radar (SAR) intelligence to the Ukrainian armed forces, enabling reconnaissance through clouds and at night.

Tracking data from organizations such as LeoLabs and Integrity ISR indicate that Cosmos 2612 has matched the orbit, inclination, and altitude of the ICEYE-X36. At its closest point, reported by Orbital Radar, the two spacecraft were separated by as little as 26 meters. Experts, including Clayton Swope of CSIS, have described the proximity as essentially “bumper-to-bumper.”

Analysts suggest these proximity operations could serve several purposes, including technical inspection, electronic jamming, or preparing for kinetic or non-kinetic interference. While the exact intentions of the Russian maneuvers remain unconfirmed, the activity is viewed as a significant escalation in space-based operations related to the conflict in Ukraine.
