Russian study finds Chinese cars rust earlier than European brands
A study conducted by Lamark across 26 regions of Russia, released in early 2025, highlights a significant disparity in corrosion resistance between European and Chinese automobile brands.
According to the research, European manufacturers typically guarantee protection against perforation corrosion for 12 years, with surface rust appearing around that same timeframe. In contrast, Chinese brands showed much earlier signs of degradation. Some Chinese models exhibited surface rust as early as the second year of use, while others showed it by the fourth year.
Local technicians, including Yaroslav Kukarin of the Fit Service chain, have noted that while recent Chinese imports show improvement, older models from 15 to 20 years ago frequently developed holes in doors and wheel arches within five to seven years. Drivers have reported visible rust on roofs, sills, and wheel arches after only one or two winters, often exacerbated by road salt and mud.
