Russian woman fined for AI bear hoax

A woman in the Amur region of Russia has been fined after using artificial intelligence to create a realistic image of a bear roaming a local street. The image, generated using ChatGPT, was originally intended as a joke for a friend but went viral on social media, causing widespread panic among residents.

The hoax prompted numerous emergency calls to local police, with some residents reporting they were too afraid to leave their homes. The situation escalated to the point where local authorities deployed hunters and specialists to locate and capture the non-existent animal.

A justice of the peace in the Magdaganinski judicial district issued a reduced fine of 15,000 rubles (approximately $159 USD) after the woman confessed and expressed regret. The court noted her cooperation as a mitigating factor, opting not to confiscate her mobile phone. The incident occurred amid heightened sensitivity regarding wildlife, following a season of increased human-bear encounters in Russia that has resulted in at least 26 deaths since March.
