The Verkhny Lars border crossing between Russia and Georgia has seen a record surge in traffic, with the Russian Federal Customs Service reporting over 20,000 people crossing in a single day on August 18. This follows high volumes on August 15 and 16, where daily crossings exceeded 19,000. The increased movement is widely attributed to rumors of a potential new military mobilization in Russia following the upcoming State Duma elections in September.

In response to the influx, the Relokac relocation assistance service reported a 70 percent increase in daily applications, rising from 70 to 120. Most applicants are between 18 and 35 years old seeking a ‘plan B’. Beyond Georgia, many Russians are also targeting Serbia and Armenia; in Yerevan, rental prices have reportedly risen by approximately 30 percent due to increased demand.

The Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs has contested the Russian figures, stating that only 7,880 people of various nationalities entered Georgia through the checkpoint in the 24-hour period, while 8,406 left. The ministry characterized the higher Russian reports as disinformation.
