Russian‑sanctioned vessel delivers military vehicles to Mali via Togo

A Russian‑sanctioned cargo ship, the Mikhail Britnev, transported trucks, armored personnel carriers and light infantry vehicles from the Russian port of Baltiysk to the port of Lomé in Togo. The vessel turned off its transponder after crossing the English Channel, docked in Lomé on July 9 and the convoy was later driven into Bamako, where the Mali military junta displayed the equipment on state television.

The shipment underscores the deepening partnership between the Kremlin and Mali’s ruling military junta, which relies on Russia’s Africa Corps – the successor to the Wagner Group – to combat jihadist and Tuareg insurgents in the north. In return, Russia receives cash payments and preferential access to Mali’s gold mines. Togo, which signed a military‑cooperation agreement with Russia last year, appears to be serving as a new logistical gateway for Russian support in the Sahel region.
