Russia's Il-96-400M faces commercial challenges against Boeing and Airbus
The Il-96-400M wide-body aircraft, developed by the United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) to achieve Russian aviation technological autonomy, is struggling to compete with Western models like Boeing and Airbus. Despite reaching important testing milestones, the aircraft faces significant hurdles in real-world commercial operations.
A primary issue is the aircraft's inability to meet the industry standard of 300 to 400 flight hours per month, which is necessary for airlines to optimize asset depreciation and maintenance costs. This low utilization rate suggests the model is not yet ready to serve as a mainstay for major domestic or international routes.
Furthermore, the Il-96-400M utilizes an outdated four-engine configuration with Aviadvigatel PS-90A1 engines. This contrasts with the global industry shift toward more efficient twin-engine wide-body aircraft, such as the Boeing 777, Boeing 787, Airbus A330, and Airbus A350. The four-engine design results in significantly higher fuel consumption per seat/kilometer and increased maintenance costs compared to its Western competitors.
