Russia deploys jet-propelled Geran-5 drones against Ukraine

Russia has intensified its aerial campaign against Ukraine by deploying advanced jet-propelled Geran-5 drones. These new models are significantly faster and fly at higher altitudes than previous propeller-driven versions, posing a severe challenge to Ukrainian air defenses. While Ukraine maintains a high interception rate for conventional Shahed drones, President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that the interception rate for these new jet-propelled models is currently only 57%.

Reports indicate that Russia is scaling up production, with estimates suggesting the manufacture of approximately 3,000 Geran-4 and Geran-5 drones per month. The increased speed and altitude of these drones reduce the reaction time for defense teams to as little as 10 to 15 seconds. Additionally, the Ukrainian military has observed the use of armor-piercing ammunition on these drones, designed to penetrate steel structures and target energy infrastructure.

In response, Ukrainian companies like SkyFall are developing specialized interceptors, such as the P1-SUN JetKiller, which has reportedly successfully neutralized a Geran-5. However, the economic impact of the ongoing attacks remains high, with air raid sirens costing the Ukrainian economy an estimated $45 million for every hour of business closures.
