Russia's Journey from Medieval Principalities to the Modern Federation

Russia originated as a collection of medieval principalities, beginning with Kievan Rus (882‑1240) under Prince Oleg and later adopting Byzantine Christianity in 988. After the Mongol invasion (1237‑1240), the region paid tribute to the Golden Horde until Ivan III unified the Moscow lands in 1480 and began building the Kremlin.

The Tsardom emerged with Ivan the Terrible's coronation in 1547, followed by the expansion of the Russian Empire under Peter the Great and Catherine the Great. The 1917 revolution ended imperial rule, leading to the Soviet Union (1922‑1991) headed by leaders such as Lenin, Stalin, and later Gorbachev. Since the USSR's dissolution in 1991, the Russian Federation has been led by figures including Boris Yeltsin and Vladimir Putin, who has been in power since 2000.

Russia celebrates Russia Day on 12 June and Victory Day on 9 May, the latter marked by a major military parade on Red Square.
