Russia's S-500 system targets U.S. F-35 and F-22 stealth aircraft
Russia has introduced the S-500, an advanced air defense network designed to challenge the dominance of American stealth fighters, specifically the F-35 and F-22. According to reports from RIA Novosti, the system features a range of approximately 595 km and the capability to intercept up to ten supersonic ballistic missiles simultaneously.
The system's effectiveness relies heavily on digital integration and networking capabilities. Successful operation requires radar nodes to communicate with extreme speed and precision to track high-speed targets across different sectors. If fully operational, the S-500 could allow Russia to monitor large portions of Eastern European airspace, potentially offsetting NATO's numerical advantage in fifth-generation aircraft.
However, technical challenges remain. While low-frequency surveillance radars may detect the presence of stealth aircraft, achieving the precise tracking required for interception remains difficult. Additionally, the potential export of this technology to China and India is viewed as a threat to U.S. electronic warfare superiority and global strategic stability.
