Russia's State Duma to include nearly 50 Ukraine war veterans

Following the recent parliamentary elections in Russia, approximately 49 veterans of the war in Ukraine are expected to take seats in the State Duma representing the pro-Kremlin United Russia party. While initial reports from United Russia General Council Secretary Vladimir Yakushev suggested a higher number of 86 veterans, state media later corrected this figure to 49 following requests from the party.

United Russia is projected to maintain a dominant position in the lower house, potentially securing around 355 of the 450 available seats. The inclusion of military personnel is viewed by observers as a move to militarize the legislature and present combat veterans as a part of the nation’s “real elite.”

International observers and critics have characterized the elections as undemocratic and unfair, noting the suppression of free speech and the exclusion of genuine political opposition. Analysts suggest that while the Kremlin aims to integrate veterans into civil life, the move may also serve as a strategic effort to encourage further military enlistment.
