Russia's Su-57 fighters deployed in Odessa strikes and new variant development

Russia's Su-57 fifth-generation fighter jets are playing an increasingly significant role in the conflict in Ukraine. Reports indicate that Su-57 aircraft were involved in strikes against port infrastructure in Odessa on August 23, targeting facilities critical to limiting Western military aid and exerting economic pressure on Ukraine.

While Russia's fleet of these advanced jets was initially very small, the number of operational Su-57s has reportedly grown from approximately 6 at the start of the 2022 conflict to between 50 and 60 units. Their combat roles include suppressing enemy air defenses, air-to-air combat, and conducting high-precision strikes within contested airspace.

In parallel, Russia is advancing the development of the Su-57D, a two-seat variant of the stealth fighter. This version features an extended fuselage to accommodate a second crew member, such as a navigator or weapons officer. This upgrade is designed to facilitate long-range, intelligence-based tactics and allow the aircraft to act as a mobile tactical hub for controlling drone swarms, including reconnaissance and interceptor UAVs, potentially integrated with artificial intelligence.
