Russian officials cite a technical malfunction as the likely cause, while unverified claims suggest a cyber‑induced shoot‑down. The accident highlights persistent development challenges for the Su‑57 program, which has experienced delays, cost overruns and limited production – fewer than 50 aircraft are in service, with a target of 76 by 2028.
