Russia's war deception exposed as China urges end to Ukraine conflict

An analysis by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) finds that Russian generals have been providing false reports to President Vladimir Putin about territorial gains in northern Ukraine. The ISW notes daily claims since July 22 of capturing villages such as Mała Słobidka, Mohryc, and Nowa Sicza, which Ukrainian forces deny. Observers see no corresponding troop movements or logistical support, suggesting the Russian command is inflating successes to persuade Western governments that the offensive is progressing.

At the same time, Beijing is signaling growing impatience with the war. Chinese President Xi Jinping, speaking through Kazakh President Kasym‑Jomart Tokayev, urged Russian leader Vladimir Putin to end the conflict in Ukraine. The diplomatic pressure reflects China’s concern over the war’s costs and its impact on Chinese interests. U.S. officials are also reassessing their approach, acknowledging earlier miscalculations about the war’s trajectory.
