RustFS 1.0 launches as open-source S3-compatible storage

RustFS 1.0 has reached general availability, providing an open-source, Apache 2.0-licensed distributed object storage platform. Designed as an S3-compatible alternative, it specifically targets users seeking a replacement for MinIO following MinIO's shift toward a proprietary licensing model for its commercial offerings.

RustFS features include bucket and object lifecycle management, multipart uploads, erasure coding, data tiering, and S3 Tables support via an integrated Apache Iceberg REST Catalog. Beyond S3, the platform supports WebDAV, the Swift API, FTP/FTPS, and MCP. It is built for distributed deployments with capabilities for storage pool expansion, data rebalancing, and self-healing.

While similar to SeaweedFS in its Apache 2.0 licensing and single-binary nature, RustFS is a narrower, purpose-built S3 object store. Unlike SeaweedFS, which provides a POSIX/FUSE mount and a distributed file system, RustFS focuses on being a drop-in MinIO replacement with a web console and specialized S3 functionality.
