Ruta del Cares trail reopens in Spain's Picos de Europa after safety inspection

The National Park authority of the Picos de Europa has reopened the iconic Ruta del Cares hiking route after a technical inspection found no immediate risk of further rockfalls. The trail was closed following a rockfall on Friday that injured a Dutch mother and her daughter, one seriously, near La Raya on the Asturian side of the gorge.

Inspectors identified the origin of the fallen block, confirmed the surrounding area is stable, and lifted the preventive closure. Visitors are reminded that the karstic terrain can produce rockfalls at any time and are advised to exercise caution, avoid the route in heavy rain or strong winds, and check conditions before setting out.
