Rutgers University study finds TikTok amplifies medical misinformation
Research from Rutgers University indicates that the TikTok recommendation algorithm disproportionately amplifies medical misinformation and conspiracy theories over verified health content.
The study, presented at the American Academy of Pediatrics Congress, specifically examined the spread of false claims regarding a link between prenatal exposure to paracetamol and the development of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This surge in misinformation followed public statements made in September 2025 by Donald Trump and Robert Kennedy regarding the alleged association, which the medical community has dismissed due to a lack of scientific evidence.
Medical researchers noted a significant increase in inquiries from pregnant patients seeking clarity on the safety of paracetamol. The investigation concluded that TikTok, a primary health information source for adolescents and young adults, contributed to the expansion of these unfounded theories.
