Ruth Snyder execution becomes historic media event
The execution of Ruth Snyder at Sing Sing prison became a landmark moment in American journalism due to a controversial, clandestine photograph. Snyder was sentenced to death for the brutal murder of her husband, a crime committed alongside her lover, Henry Judd Gray, in an attempt to collect a life insurance payout.
During the execution, Chicago Tribune photographer Tom Howard, hired by the New York Daily News, managed to secretly capture Snyder’s final moments using a folding camera concealed around his ankle. The image, which appeared on the front page of the New York Daily News the following day, remains one of the most famous and debated photographs in press history, symbolizing the tension between journalistic sensationalism and human dignity.
