Nigeria finishes seventh, Africa’s top nation at Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games

Team Nigeria placed seventh overall at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, securing 24 medals – ten gold, seven silver and seven bronze – and emerged as the highest‑ranked African nation. Highlights included Samuel Ogazi’s historic gold in the men’s 400 m (44.25 seconds), Ezekiel Nathaniel’s first‑ever Nigerian gold in the men’s 400 m hurdles (48.47 seconds), and Chukwuebuka Enekwechi’s shot‑put title (21.07 m). Ruth Usoro earned silver in the women’s long jump, while the men’s 4 × 100 m relay was initially awarded silver before a successful appeal reduced it to bronze.

The National Sports Commission (NSC) credited Chairman Shehu Dikko and Director General Bukola Olopade for the performance, though the haul fell short of the NSC’s target of 18 gold medals (and a projected 22). The reduced sports programme compared with previous Games was cited as a factor in the lower medal count versus the 2022 Birmingham edition.
