Ruthin School put up for sale for £5m after closure

Ruthin School, a historic 742-year-old independent boarding school in Denbighshire, North Wales, has been put on the market for a guide price of £5 million following its sudden closure in July. The school, which accommodates approximately 201 pupils, shut its doors at the end of the summer term due to mounting financial pressures and the impact of VAT changes on private education.

The institution was acquired in 2023 by the Chinese firm Galaxy Global Education, which had previously injected £6.4 million into the school. Despite this, the school faced significant losses in recent years. Notable alumni include Julian Lennon.

Joint administrators from FRP Advisory have appointed Sanderson Weatherall to market the estate. The property includes a Grade II listed main building from the 1850s, a 30-bed boarding house, sports facilities, and over 42 acres of land, including 24 acres of agricultural space. The sale offers potential buyers the choice to continue the site’s educational legacy or pursue alternative development.
