Rutland business association seeks review of provincial poverty reduction office
The Uptown Rutland Business Association (URBA) is calling on the British Columbia provincial government to conduct a formal review of the Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction office in Kelowna. The association is requesting an assessment to determine if the current location at 405 Hwy. 33 West remains appropriate and to identify measures to mitigate its impact on the surrounding community.
Since the office was relocated to Rutland in 2023, local businesses and residents have reported an increase in social disorder. Reported issues include theft, vandalism, public drug use, and discarded needles. URBA stated that these challenges have forced local businesses to increase spending on security and property damage recovery.
Lynn Jack, president of the Rutland Residents Association, noted that the relocation has brought increased numbers of homeless individuals and people with mental health challenges to the area, suggesting the office should have been placed in a more central location.
