Rwanda Completes Full Interoperability of eKash National Payment System
Rwanda’s instant national payment platform, eKash, has become fully interoperable, allowing seamless transfers between bank accounts, mobile wallets and any combination of the two. The transition, announced by RSwitch and aligned with the National Bank of Rwanda Directive No. 45/2026, took effect on 14 July 2026.
Customers will be charged a maximum fee of RWF 20 per transaction, and the system supports transfers of up to RWF 10 million, subject to each institution’s limits. The service can be accessed through existing digital channels such as USSD codes, mobile‑banking apps and internet‑banking portals, with no new registration or app download required. Funds remain protected under Rwanda’s regulated financial framework.
The completion of the interoperability programme marks a milestone in Rwanda’s push for a more connected, secure and financially inclusive digital‑payments ecosystem, providing a unified infrastructure for digital transactions across the country’s financial institutions.
