Rwanda implements agricultural projects to boost food security

Agricultural initiatives in Rwanda are improving food security and nutrition through both household-level interventions and school-based technological upgrades.

In the Ngororero district, the Second Sustainable Agricultural Intensification and Food Security Project (SAIP II) has assisted vulnerable families by introducing poultry farming, vegetable production, and nutrition education. Participants report that access to animal products, such as eggs, has helped combat malnutrition in children and allowed households to reduce food expenditures and increase savings.

Simultaneously, the Scaling Sustainable School Feeding Innovations (3SFI) Project is introducing technology to school gardens in the Karongi, Rusizi, and Nyamasheke districts. Schools have received 135 machines, including 90 seed planters and 45 multi-crop threshers, to increase the efficiency of producing nutritious, high-iron beans. This project is a partnership involving the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources, the Rwanda Agriculture Board, and the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT, with financial support from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation.
