Rwanda poised to host first European migrant return hub

Rwanda is the leading candidate to host Europe’s first return hub for deported migrants, according to multiple sources. Under a potential agreement expected in the coming weeks, asylum seekers denied protection in five European nations would be sent to this facility in East Africa.

The participating European countries include Germany, Austria, Denmark, Greece, and the Netherlands. These nations are working to establish such centers to increase the efficiency of deportations and serve as a deterrent to irregular migration. While the European Commission attends related meetings as an observer, it has not officially commented on the specific modalities of the project.

Diplomatic activity has increased, with representatives from the five European countries visiting Kigali in early September and a Rwandan delegation traveling to Europe, including Brussels, for meetings. An official agreement could be finalized in mid-November, possibly during a migration-focused conference in Vienna.
