Rwanda secures 10-year deal to host Formula 1 Grand Prix
Formula 1 has signed a 10-year agreement with Rwanda to host an African Grand Prix, marking the sport's return to the continent after a 33-year absence. The race is expected to join the championship calendar in the early 2030s, following the completion of a purpose-built circuit in Bugesera, south of Kigali.
Formula 1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali stated the partnership aims to create a legacy of tourism, investment, and skills. Rwandan President Paul Kagame noted the ambition is to pave the way for other races to be hosted on the continent.
In South Africa, officials and industry experts suggest that Rwanda's deal does not preclude the country from hosting its own Grand Prix. While South Africa's government has focused on upgrading the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit, private sector proposals are also targeting a new circuit near Cape Town. Experts suggest that the success of the Rwandan event could strengthen the commercial case for multiple races within Africa.
