Rwanda to host 38th Montreal Protocol summit in 2026

Rwanda is scheduled to host the 38th Meeting of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol (MOP38) in Kigali from November 2 to 6, 2026. The summit will convene governments, international organizations, and industry representatives to discuss ozone layer protection and climate change mitigation.

The meeting serves as a platform to assess progress on the Montreal Protocol and evaluate the implementation of the Kigali Amendment. This amendment specifically targets the reduction of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), which, while not depleting the ozone layer, contribute significantly to global warming.

Environment Minister Dr. Bernadette Arakwiye noted that the summit will allow nations to review steps taken since the adoption of the Kigali Amendment and identify necessary future actions. The discussions are expected to cover technological solutions and international cooperation to advance environmental objectives, impacting sectors such as refrigeration, air conditioning, and food security.
