Rwanda reaches agreement to host Formula 1 Grand Prix

Rwanda has reportedly reached an agreement to host a Formula 1 Grand Prix, marking the sport's return to the African continent for the first time since 1993. According to sources close to the Rwandan government and the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), the bid has been approved, with an official announcement expected in Kigali next week.

The race is anticipated to debut around 2030, potentially at a new permanent circuit located near Bugesera International Airport. The project is said to have support from Qatar. Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, a long-time advocate for racing in Africa, has expressed strong support for the initiative.

Rwanda has increasingly utilized high-profile sporting events to enhance its international profile, including hosting the cycling world championships and sponsoring major football clubs. However, some critics have characterized these efforts as “sports-washing,” suggesting they are used to distract from domestic human rights concerns and political restrictions.
