Rwanda to host Formula 1 Grand Prix starting in 2030
Formula 1 is reportedly set to return to the African continent with a new Grand Prix in Rwanda, potentially starting in 2030. While an official announcement has not yet been made, sources indicate an agreement has been reached, with formal confirmation expected as early as late 2024 or 2026.
The project is a major priority for Rwandan President Paul Kagame, who has been actively negotiating with F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali and FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem. To host the event, Rwanda plans to construct a permanent racing circuit approximately 40 kilometers from Kigali, near the Bugesera International Airport.
The circuit design is expected to be handled by WurzDesign, a firm owned by former F1 driver Alexander Wurz, possibly in collaboration with Tilke Engineering. If realized, the Rwandan Grand Prix would end a 37-year absence of Formula 1 racing in Africa, following the last event held at the Kyalami Circuit in South Africa in 1993.
