RWE plans to transform Hambach mine into a massive lake

RWE has announced plans to transform the Hambach open-cast mine into one of Germany’s largest lakes. Starting in 2030, the company intends to flood the area using a combination of groundwater and water from the Rhine.

The project has met with local interest and some controversy. While some residents view the transition from mining to a lake as a positive development following decades of dust and pollution, environmental groups like BUND have raised concerns. Specifically, they argue that water from the Rhine may not be clean enough for the lake.

To address water quality, experts have evaluated the feasibility of constructing a large-scale filtration plant. The final decision regarding the use of Rhine water and the necessary infrastructure rests with the Arnsberg District Government, the responsible regulatory authority. RWE estimates that the lake will reach its planned water level in approximately 40 years.
