RWE settles with Trump administration, receives $1.22 bn to abandon US offshore wind leases

German energy group RWE reached a settlement with the Trump administration in which the U.S. Interior Department will pay the company $1.22 billion to relinquish three offshore wind lease areas off the coasts of New York, California and Louisiana. RWE had previously invested more than $1 billion in acquiring the leases and developing the projects, but concluded that no permitting path exists in the foreseeable future.

The settlement funds will be redirected to fossil‑fuel projects: a $900 million investment for a 16 % stake in a liquefied natural gas (LNG) project in Louisiana and a $300 million turbine‑reservation agreement to support the construction of 15 natural‑gas peaking power plants across the United States. The deal brings total U.S. administration spending on offshore‑wind lease buybacks to nearly $4 billion.

RWE’s share price rose about three percent after the announcement. The company also outlined a broader U.S. investment plan of roughly €17 billion over the next six years, aiming to expand its generation capacity to about 22 GW by 2031. The settlement reflects the Trump administration’s policy of discouraging offshore wind development in favor of conventional energy sources.
