RWE relinquishes offshore wind leases in $1.22 billion settlement

RWE U.S. Offshore has agreed to a $1.22 billion settlement with the Trump administration to relinquish offshore wind leases in Louisiana, New York, and California. This agreement marks a significant shift in federal energy policy as the administration seeks to discourage wind energy expansion in favor of fossil fuels.

In exchange for the settlement, RWE will abandon projects that could have provided approximately 7 gigawatts of power, enough to serve over 5 million homes. Instead, the German-based company announced it will invest $900 million in a liquefied natural gas project in Louisiana and $300 million in natural gas turbines. RWE is currently developing 15 natural gas projects across the United States.

Interior Secretary Doug Burgum stated that the administration aims for an energy system built on dependable baseload power rather than technologies dependent on subsidies. Conversely, critics such as Senator Sheldon Whitehouse have characterized the lease buybacks as a method to steer companies away from clean energy, potentially increasing costs for consumers by displacing renewable sources with more expensive fossil fuel plants.
