RWE to build 400 MW battery storage system in Moerdijk
RWE has made a final investment decision to construct a 400 MW battery storage system in Moerdijk, Netherlands. The facility is expected to be operational by the second quarter of 2028.
The system will have a capacity of 1,100 MWh and will utilize existing infrastructure, connecting to the national electricity grid via RWE’s existing substation in Moerdijk. The installation will consist of 208 containers filled with lithium-ion batteries, capable of delivering its full power for nearly three hours.
Nikolaus Valerius, CEO of RWE Generation, stated that the battery is a significant milestone for reliable power supply and grid relief in North Brabant. The system is designed to absorb excess electricity within seconds and meet peak evening demand for approximately 500,000 households. Mark Lentjes, regional director for Tennet South Netherlands, noted that the project will act as a congestion mitigator near the Moerdijk-Noord 150,000-volt high-voltage station, improving grid efficiency for the entire North Brabant region.
