Rwenzori Marathon attracts 8,000 runners in Kasese

The fifth edition of the Tusker Lite Mt. Rwenzori Marathon took place in Kasese, Uganda, attracting approximately 8,000 runners from 26 different countries. The event features 42km, 21km, 10km, and 5km races, starting from the Equator in Queen Elizabeth National Park and proceeding toward the foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains.

The marathon has achieved World Athletics Label Road Race status, making it the first in Uganda and one of only three in East Africa to receive this international designation. This status ensures the event meets global standards for course measurement, timing, and race operations.

In addition to the athletic competition, the event saw participation from various organizations, including the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) and the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA). The marathon serves as a key component of Uganda’s strategy to integrate sports with the tourism industry, providing local athletes with opportunities to compete for significant prize money on home soil.
