Ryan Condal defends House of the Dragon deviations from book source

Showrunner Ryan Condal has addressed fan criticism regarding the significant deviations between the HBO series ‘House of the Dragon’ and George R. R. Martin’s book ‘Fire and Blood’. Following the third season finale, viewers noted major changes to key plot points.

Specifically, the series alters the prophecy of ice and fire by having Rhaenyra Targaryen announce it publicly to link her claim to the throne with the threat from the north, whereas in the book, she does not make such a public declaration. Additionally, the character arcs for Hugh Hammer and Ulf the White have been restructured; while they act as a duo known as the ‘Two Traitors’ in the source material, the show separates them.

Condal explained to Esquire that these changes are necessary due to the medium transition, noting that approximately 200 pages of prose must be expanded to fill four full television seasons.
