Ryan Gibson honored for off-duty rescue of 11-year-old girl
Ryan Gibson, an off-duty lifeguard from Cape May Point, has received recognition for rescuing an 11-year-old girl from dangerous ocean currents. The incident occurred on Wednesday, August 12th, at approximately 6:33 p.m. near Lehigh Avenue beach.
While playing volleyball after his shift had ended, Gibson noticed the girl being pulled into the water. Despite lacking his standard rescue buoy and ropes, he entered the water and successfully guided the girl to a nearby rock jetty.
Cape May Point Beach Patrol Chief Ben Swan and off-duty lifeguard Matt Gibson assisted in bringing both the victim and Gibson safely back to shore. The girl was treated on-site by emergency responders after swallowing water. Gibson sustained only minor scrapes and scratches during the rescue.
