Ryan Michael English, a 26-year-old transgender woman from Massachusetts, has been sentenced to 73 months in prison following a plot to assassinate U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.

English was arrested in January 2025 after turning herself in to Capitol Police near the U.S. Capitol. At the time, she was carrying a folding knife and two improvised Molotov cocktails fashioned from vodka bottles. English admitted to the officers that she intended to kill Bessent on the day of his Senate confirmation.

U.S. District Judge Rudolph Contreras handed down the sentence, which includes three years of supervised release. While federal prosecutors had recommended a prison term of 10 years and one month, the judge noted that the plan was “exceedingly low or non-existent” in its chance of success and that the Molotov cocktails appeared incapable of igniting. English stated she was experiencing a mental health crisis and drug addiction during the incident. Her defense argued she was traumatized by fears regarding transgender rights under the incoming Trump administration.
