Ryan Michael English sentenced for plot to kill Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent

Ryan Michael English, a 25-year-old transgender woman, has been sentenced to between 63 and 73 months in prison for a plot to assassinate U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.

English, who traveled from Massachusetts to Washington, D.C., in January 2025, was arrested near the U.S. Capitol. At the time of the arrest, English was in possession of a folding knife and two improvised Molotov cocktails. According to court documents, English had also considered targeting House Speaker Mike Johnson, War Secretary Pete Hegseth, and the Heritage Foundation.

U.S. District Judge Rudolph Contreras handed down the sentence after English pleaded guilty to charges including the unlawful possession of a firearm and carrying dangerous weapons on Capitol grounds. Prosecutors had sought a sentence of up to 10 years, but the judge noted that English had turned themselves in and that the plan was “basically impossible to succeed.” English stated during the proceedings that the actions were inspired by Luigi Mangione.
