The Shards TV series premieres amid immersive marketing and star‑led hype

FX’s adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’s novel *The Shards* debuted at a New York premiere on Monday night, with a scheduled release on August 5. Created and show‑run by Ryan Murphy, the series is set in 1980s Los Angeles and follows a group of privileged high‑school seniors at an elite prep school.

The author took a hands‑off approach, selling the rights, drafting the first two episodes and serving as an executive producer. Marketing for the show has featured immersive 80s‑themed pop‑up installations, including a mall makeover and vintage‑style posters, to recreate the novel’s paranoid atmosphere. The cast includes Kaia Gerber as Susan Reynolds and Homer Gere as Robert Mallory, alongside Igby Rigney, Hayes Warner and Evan Rachel Wood.

Promotional events have been held in multiple territories, with the series also slated to debut on Disney+ in Sweden on August 6.
