Ryan Murphy’s ‘The Shards’ series launches on Disney+ and FX

The Shards, a television adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’s 2023 horror novel, is being produced by Ryan Murphy and will debut on Disney+ on August 6 and on FX on August 5. Set in 1981 Los Angeles, the series follows a group of privileged students at the elite Buckley School as they navigate identity, sexuality and a serial killer known as the Trawler.

The cast includes Igby Rigney as fictionalized Bret Ellis, Homer Gere as the mysterious new student Robert Mallory, Kaia Gerber as student‑body president Susan Reynolds, and Wes Bentley as Terry Schaffer. Murphy and producer Brad Simpson say the show blends the tone of American Psycho with the style of Glee and American Horror Story.
