Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scores shootout winner in Oilers victory
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins returned from injured reserve to lead the Edmonton Oilers to a 6-5 shootout victory over the Carolina Hurricanes. After missing the start of the season due to a lower-body injury sustained in practice, the veteran centre scored a goal in regulation and the decisive shootout winner.
The Oilers (8-1-1) saw strong performances from Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid, who both recorded two goals and three assists. McDavid extended his league-leading scoring streak, becoming one of only four NHL players to reach 30 points in 10 games or fewer.
For the Hurricanes (8-2-2), goals were provided by Jackson Blake, Sebastian Aho, Seth Jarvis, Logan Stankhoven, and Juuso Valimaki. The defending Stanley Cup champions have now lost two of their last three games.
