Chunichi Dragons sign outfielder Ryan Ward from Los Angeles Dodgers

The Chunichi Dragons of Nippon Professional Baseball have signed outfielder Ryan Ward following his release from the Los Angeles Dodgers. Ward, 28, is a power hitter who recorded 168 career minor league home runs and earned the Pacific Coast League MVP title in 2025.

During his rookie MLB season with the Dodgers, Ward appeared in 20 games, recording three home runs and 12 RBIs with a .218 batting average. He was designated for assignment in September to clear space on the 40-man roster.

Analysts suggest the move benefits both parties. For Ward, the transition to Japan offers guaranteed playing time and a higher salary than remaining in the minor leagues, especially given the potential for labor disputes and a possible lockdown in Major League Baseball. For Chunichi, the acquisition aims to bolster a lineup that has struggled to reach the Climax Series, following their recent signing of Miguel Sanó.
