Ryan Zinke introduces Montana public lands legislation
Montana Representative Ryan Zinke has announced the introduction of the ‘A River Runs Through It Act’ (ARRTI), a public lands package designed to manage approximately 430,000 acres across the Blackfoot and Clearwater Valleys. The legislation combines the Blackfoot Clearwater Stewardship Proposal and the Lincoln Prosperity Proposal into a single landscape-scale plan.
The bill aims to balance conservation with economic activity by expanding recreation opportunities, supporting the timber industry, and reducing wildfire risks. Key provisions include the designation of six Forest Restoration Areas, totaling roughly 180,000 acres, where timber harvesting, thinning, and prescribed burns are permitted to improve forest health. Additionally, the proposal prioritizes fuel reduction west of Lincoln to protect local infrastructure.
Zinke, who is not seeking reelection, intends to introduce the bill in the House of Representatives. The announcement was made alongside a diverse group of stakeholders, including timber industry members, recreation groups, and conservation organizations. Zinke noted that the proposal was built by local communities that have been working toward a solution for over two decades.
