Ryanair and SAC dispute Comiso airport operations
A dispute has resurfaced between Ryanair and SAC, the company managing the Catania and Comiso airports, regarding the airline's absence from Comiso. Ryanair CEO Eddie Wilson claims that an agreement to maintain and develop operations at Comiso was reached in 2023, but alleges that SAC changed the terms at the moment of signing. Wilson stated that the airline is ready to return immediately if the contract is honored.
SAC maintains a conflicting version of events, asserting that Ryanair changed its position and that the airline's economic demands were unsustainable and potentially discriminatory toward other carriers. SAC previously indicated that Ryanair sought additional funds from Catania to continue flying to Comiso.
In response to the ongoing tension, the union Cisal Catania has called for a public confrontation between the parties. Union secretary Giovanni Lo Schiavo is seeking clarity on which party failed to respect the agreed-upon terms, noting that the dispute negatively impacts the local territory and the strategic role of the Comiso airport.
