Ryanair calls EU free‑carry‑on baggage proposal regulatory nonsense

The European Parliament has drafted a rule that would obligate airlines operating in the EU to offer passengers one free cabin bag up to 7 kg, alongside a personal item. Ryanair argues the measure would force the cost of the extra baggage into the base ticket price, penalising travellers who only need a small item. Michael O'Leary, chief executive of Ryanair, described the draft as “regulatory nonsense”, saying the current system lets customers choose services they use.

Ryanair warns that mandatory free carry‑on bags could strain cabin space on narrow‑body aircraft and increase boarding delays, ultimately raising fares for all passengers. The proposal has support in the European Parliament but still requires approval by member‑state governments before it becomes law.
