Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary is facing multiple controversies following the airline’s annual general meeting.

O’Leary accused NATS, the UK air traffic control operator, of lying regarding the cause of a recent system outage that led to thousands of flight cancellations. While NATS CEO Martin Rolfe claimed the cause was different from a 2023 incident, O’Leary maintains it was a rogue flight plan and has called for Rolfe’s resignation. The UK government has ordered an investigation into the failure.

Separately, O’Leary has drawn intense criticism from politicians and advocacy groups after referring to rival airlines as “high-fare rapists.” UK Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander and Irish officials condemned the remarks, noting the potential to trivialize sexual violence.

Regarding operational safety, O’Leary disputed claims that a passenger was partially sucked out of a plane during a window failure on a flight from Greece to Germany. While acknowledging the passenger was pulled toward the opening by pressure, the airline maintains the individual remained inside the aircraft.

Financially, nearly 40 percent of Ryanair shareholders voted against a proposed £129 million pay and share option deal for O’Leary, though the plan is expected to proceed.
