Ryanair CEO O'Leary pushes for ban on early‑morning airport alcohol sales

Ryanair chief executive Michael O'Leary told the Times that he does not understand why airport bars serve drinks at five or six a.m. and argues that early‑morning alcohol consumption contributes to poor passenger behaviour on flights. He called for the same restrictions that apply to other UK alcohol retailers – which prevent sales until later in the morning – to be extended to airport bars.

O'Leary did not comment on whether he would seek to limit alcohol consumption on board aircraft. Ryanair announced in January 2025 that it would pursue legal action against disruptive passengers to recoup losses from diverted flights. Under current UK law, being intoxicated on an aircraft is illegal and can attract fines up to £5,000 and up to two years' imprisonment.
