Spain and Poland approve 5.4 billion euro Airbus tanker deal

Spain and Poland have approved a joint framework agreement to purchase Airbus A330 MRTT multi-role tanker transport aircraft. The deal, valued at approximately 5.4 billion euros, will be conducted through the European Union’s Security Action for Europe (SAFE) instrument.

The procurement includes at least seven aircraft, with Poland set to receive four by 2030. This acquisition is intended to bolster NATO’s projection capabilities and support the integration of advanced fighter jets, such as the F-35, into the Polish Air Force.

Industrial activity will be centered in Spain, with Airbus planning to open a conversion center in Seville by late 2027 to complement its existing facility in Getafe. This expansion aims to increase the annual conversion rate of civilian aircraft to military versions from five to seven.

Separately, the Spanish aviation sector faces internal tensions. Ryanair is engaged in a public dispute with Spanish Transport Minister Óscar Puente regarding significant seat reductions at regional airports. The airline attributes these cuts to rising airport fees set by Aena, while the Minister suggests the airline is shifting capacity to more profitable major hubs.

Additionally, labor disputes have emerged within the Spanish aviation infrastructure, as Aena and Enaire face legal challenges regarding the payment of public holidays.
