Ryanair faces legal challenge to its EU operating license

The European Network Airlines Association (ENAA), led by Lufthansa and Air France-KLM, has filed a lawsuit against Ryanair in the High Court of Ireland. The association is seeking to revoke Ryanair’s European Union operating license, alleging that the low-cost carrier fails to comply with EU rules regarding ownership and control.

ENAA argues that its member airlines face unfair competition from low-cost and non-EU carriers that they claim benefit from a more favorable regulatory framework. Ryanair has responded by stating it fully complies with all EU ownership and control requirements. The company characterized the legal action as an “artificial claim” by ENAA and suggested the lawsuit is driven by the inability of major European airline groups to compete with Ryanair’s low fares.

While the legal process is expected to take months, the outcome could significantly impact flight routes, frequencies, and pricing across Europe.
