Ryanair passengers stranded after Etna eruption shuts Catania airport

The eruption of Mount Etna forced the closure of Catania–Fontanarossa Airport, leaving over a thousand Ryanair passengers unable to board their flights. Travelers were redirected to Trapani airport, where many were forced to sleep on the floor of the Florio terminal until buses arrived in the early morning. Ryanair informed passengers that limited hotel capacity meant they had to arrange their own accommodation and later claim reimbursement for reasonable expenses.

Consumer association ADOC announced it will consider legal action against Ryanair, alleging the airline failed to provide required assistance such as meals, accommodation, and transport, despite the disruption being classified as a force‑majeure event. ADOC urges affected passengers to seek compensation for the additional hardship caused by the airline’s handling of the situation.
