Ryanair cuts capacity in Germany and Austria due to high fees

Ryanair is implementing significant capacity reductions across several European markets, primarily citing high operational costs, airport fees, and government aviation taxes. In Germany, the airline will offer approximately 700,000 fewer seats this winter, a 10 percent decrease compared to the previous year. The most substantial impact will be felt at Berlin Brandenburg Airport, where Ryanair plans to close its base on October 24, reducing its presence by half and cutting 12 routes.

In Bremen, Ryanair has announced it will completely cease operations by the start of the summer 2027 schedule following failed negotiations over airport fees. The Bremen Senate has countered claims by stating the airline sought terms that would have allowed nearly free use of infrastructure, which would have resulted in financial losses for the airport.

In Austria, Ryanair is reducing its aircraft presence at Vienna-Schwechat from 16 to 12 and cutting 12 routes, including Copenhagen-Vienna. The airline attributes this to the Austrian passenger tax and rising air traffic control fees. While capacity is being cut in these regions, Ryanair plans to expand its presence in Memmingen and Cologne, and will introduce new services in Saarbrücken and Friedrichshafen.
