Rylie Shaw diagnosed with narcolepsy after medical dismissal
Rylie Shaw, a 22-year-old two-time world champion cheerleader from Riverside County, California, has shared her experience of living with a neurological sleep disorder after years of medical dismissal.
Shaw reported that her extreme daytime fatigue was initially dismissed by doctors as typical teenage laziness. Throughout her adolescence, she sought various medical opinions, with specialists suggesting possibilities ranging from attention disorders and depression to diabetes.
At age 17, an ear, nose, and throat specialist identified a deviated septum and a collapsing nostril, subsequently recommending a sleep study. The study revealed that Shaw was suffering from idiopathic hypersomnia, a rare disorder characterized by extreme daytime sleepiness. Her condition eventually progressed to narcolepsy, which included episodes of cataplexy—sudden muscle weakness triggered by intense emotions. The unpredictability of her symptoms eventually led her to leave competitive cheerleading.
