Ryszard Lenczewski, Oscar-nominated cinematographer, dies at 78

Renowned Polish cinematographer Ryszard Lenczewski has passed away at the age of 78. The news was announced by director Paweł Pawlikowski during the closing ceremony of the Polish Film Festival in Gdynia.

Lenczewski was best known internationally for his work on the film ‘Ida’, for which he and Łukasz Żal received an Academy Award nomination for Best Cinematography in 2015. His accolades for ‘Ida’ also included a European Film Award and a Golden Frog at Camerimage.

A graduate of the Łódź Film School, Lenczewski served as a lecturer and was the associate dean of the Cinematography Department from 2008 to 2014. He held the title of professor of film arts and was a member of several prestigious organizations, including the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
